Asbestos and PAH surveys of asphalt road surfacing are an issue of safety, regulatory compliance and cost control for road sector stakeholders. Yet the information from investigations already carried out often remains scattered, hard to find and under-used.

Regulations

What does the regulation say?

Asphalt road surfacing is considered immovable property by its nature. When it contains asbestos, it can pose a risk to workers’ health. If asbestos is discovered during a project, work may be halted.

Since the decree of 9 May 2017, the French Labour Code requires clients, project owners and property owners to carry out an asbestos survey before any work on roads. The provisions come into force upon publication of an implementing order.

On 30 June 2024, a new order relating to standard NF X46-102 was published in the Journal Officiel. Amiante360 Voirie provides mapping that complies with the regulations in force (Art. R. 4412-97 – 2012 version) and is evolving to incorporate regulatory changes. It also consolidates information on the presence of PAHs.
